The Copywriter
November 2005
Dear %CUST%,

October saw us send out our new brochure which has received a positive response. We added the London Development Agency to our list of public sector clients and won a number of exciting website projects – more news to follow later. The copywriting course held at Exeter University is a new venture and one that has exciting potential. We have already had interest from other universities and are hoping to develop the course further to include advertising and public relations.

Proof Reader

After leaving school I trained in London as a PA. Although for a few years I worked in many different companies and learnt a great deal, I never felt that my heart was in it and I was craving more freedom and creativity. It was when I was working as an Account Handler for an Advertising agency, that I realised I loved proof checking and was actually pretty good at it! This encouraged me to qualify as a proofreader, and two years ago I set up on my own.

I have worked with Stratton Craig for the last year, and have been in-house with them for the last four months. Being self-employed is fantastic, and although there is a lot of uncertainty involved, the positive aspects far outweigh the negative ones. I love the variety of my work, and have met such a diverse range of people, that it’s just not possible to become bored!

The most difficult proofreading job I have had to do so far was for Swiss Re. It involved checking insurance brochures in seven different languages, and not speaking any of them, I had to check each word against the correct copy provided by the client. However, it was a great challenge, and I had some really good feedback as a result.

My only proofreading ‘claim to fame’ was working with the team at River Cottage. I checked Hugh’s 2005 diary, which had lots of cooking tips and recipes, I even ended up learning quite a bit!

In my spare time I write children’s books, which I hope to have published one day. When I’m not doing this, I love meeting up with my friends and having a good time. I also enjoy exercising and generally keeping fit and happy!

Copywriting Workshops

In May, Stratton Craig ran two sessions at Exeter University giving an insight into copywriting and public relations. Due to the great success of these sessions, we have been asked back to run the whole two day course in April next year! The course will consist of a day focused on advertising with guest speakers and a workshop on copywriting and a day focused on PR. If you would like to learn more about our courses, please call us on 01225 314100 or visit the Stratton Craig website.

London Development Agency

Development agencies were set up by the government six years ago to oversee the economic prosperity of nine UK regions. The London Development Agency’s role is to plan for the long-term success of this vibrant global city. Our job has been to write two ten-minute speeches for the Chair and Chief Executive respectively, for delivery at major conferences. The first speech discussed the themes of economic and social challenges and opportunities. The second was on the subject of why diversity is good for business and for the city. In both cases, the tone had to reflect the important partnerships with local authorities and other groups concerned with the future wellbeing of London.
