Up close and personal DANIELLE AUBRÉE
Proof Reader
After leaving school I trained in London as a PA. Although for a few years I worked in many different companies and learnt a great deal, I never felt that my heart was in it and I was craving more freedom and creativity. It was when I was working as an Account Handler for an Advertising agency, that I realised I loved proof checking and was actually pretty good at it! This encouraged me to qualify as a proofreader, and two years ago I set up on my own. I have worked with Stratton Craig for the last year, and have been in-house with them for the last four months. Being self-employed is fantastic, and although there is a lot of uncertainty involved, the positive aspects far outweigh the negative ones. I love the variety of my work, and have met such a diverse range of people, that it’s just not possible to become bored! The most difficult proofreading job I have had to do so far was for Swiss Re. It involved checking insurance brochures in seven different languages, and not speaking any of them, I had to check each word against the correct copy provided by the client. However, it was a great challenge, and I had some really good feedback as a result. My only proofreading ‘claim to fame’ was working with the team at River Cottage. I checked Hugh’s 2005 diary, which had lots of cooking tips and recipes, I even ended up learning quite a bit! In my spare time I write children’s books, which I hope to have published one day. When I’m not doing this, I love meeting up with my friends and having a good time. I also enjoy exercising and generally keeping fit and happy!
